Hi - any advice would be appreciated!!!!

I need to get my bungalow re-vamped with new light switches, power sockets, electric heater/storage heater sockets (the wiring has been checked and is in good condition, so doesn't need a complete re-wire).

My question is as follows: I will be having the walls plastered/dry lined AFTER the electrics have been installed....how are the electric wires installed (between the walls in the cavity from the loft or channelled into the walls)? And secondly if some walls are dry lined is the installation any different as wires can be hidden behind the dry lining and perhaps not channelled into the walls? I would obviously prefer as little interference with the existing wall condition as possible.

Any tips on the best place to site these sockets and the number (is it best to over estimate and put in more sockets than is required currently? This is such a big decision as once its done its done!!)

Thanks for any offerings Karen x

You have posed in the projects forum. A better place would have been "Electrics UK" where the sparkies reside.

In answer to your question the cables are fixed to the bare walls and covered with plastic capping. Plasterboard is attached using the "dot & dab" method which spaces if from the wall sufficiently for the cables. If its plastered the capping will be plastered over. Either way channeling is not required.

Where you put sockes is up to you, but it's a good idea to include extra, its much easier to add them before the walls are plastered.

your description is confusing..

you say the wiring is in good nick and doesn't need replacing, ten you start talking about sinking wiring and where to position the sockets..

is this a rewire or not?

is the current install all surface then?

typically, a room needs a double socket in each corner, and then every 2m along a wall if it's over 4m long..

your "tv corner" in the lounge will need at least 2 double, possibly 3-4 depending on the kit you have down there ( it soon adds up.. sky, dvd, hi-fi, telly, games console etc... ), as well as a tv aerial point and possibly an uplink for sky to the loft for distribution to other rooms..

in the bedrooms then you may want a couple of double sockets behind the bed for clocks and lamps etc. and a double in each corner for the inevitable tv/pc that ends up in the bedrooms these days..

and talking of pc's and tv's.. if you know where they are going then a drop for an aerial from a loft amplifier and a network point might be a good idea..

Mr Maxwell will insist you have a phone point here too, if you are thinking of SKY.
