I'll ask her when I see her again. Hopefully the plumber that fitted them sorted out her stopcock too. For some reason, a 3" hole had been made in the backboard of the sink unit but it was too high - I could only just see just the tip of the stopcock handle so was unable to get my hand on it either through the hole or from underneath the unit. Just needed a bigger, lower hole cut.

Your not getting any younger either so why not think one for yourself.. alternatively you could take up Yoga

Every now and then I turn it off and on to make sure it doesn't seize up. In fact, talking about it had made me just do it.

Yer, but I would respectfully suggest that you don't want to shut the stop tap in order to drain either a sealed system or a gravity fed one.

I always turn off the stop tap and drain down a CWST, never trust a gate valve, they are always removed and a new full bore lever valve is fitted.

Agreed but speaking with family etc, the price for a plumber unless you know an old had are astronomical in london

More the issue is are you paying the going rate for a plumber. Or being ripped off by a fella chancing his hand doing a some plumbing

I would also respectfully suggest that it is a great way to prevent water from entering onto the property footprint.

Not an issue when dealing with a leaky radiator - valve, say.

There wouldn't BE a gate valve going to a CWST, only from it.
And if you were concerned, tie the friggin ballvalve up and empty it.
You seem to want to do a lot of unnecessary work..

A pro would often just bung it or freeze the pipe of course, for a rad valve.

Are you telling me that they need a degree?

I'm talking about the basic plumber not a heating engineer. Even I could fit taps, rads etc,all you need to have is a toolbag and be relatively fit

Tying a ball valve up is the same as turning the mains off and draining it.

Its easier to turn off the mains than going into a loft, also not able to freeze 100mm of pipe work sticking out of the floor board.
