Emersion element in a hot water tank

Hello all

I have a sneaking suspicion that the element is all furred and needs replacing. Can anyone tell me how this is replaced - there is a massive 'nut' at the top of the tank where the emersion goes on - is it a case of unscrewing and reaplcing - i also notice that on the top of the eletrical inlet you can unscrew and pull out some of the inlet?

What has caused you to believe there is something wrong with the element?

it just takes forever to heat up - we live in a very hard water area and the previous owner told me it had been there for 10 years....
