We have a multifuel stove with two ash pans under the grate.

To stop the grate burning out I try to keep the level of the ash to a minimum and so empty it quite frequently.

Trouble is, as the ashes are hot when I lift the pan out and tip the ashes into a metal bucket the dust billows up with the heat, x2 with the two ash pans and it makes quite a mess in the living room...

I try to minimise it by opening the stove door so some gets sucked up the chimney, but most just settles around the room everywhere.

Whats the best way to stop this, I have seen the metal ash carriers boxes advertised and wondered if that was the best thing? Or is there a "fireproof" vacumn one could use?

What methods do other people employ when emptying the ashes out of a hot stove?

Cheers..

Empty ashpan straight into metal bin outside.

Would do that BUT... wandering across the living room, down a long passageway across the kitchen with an ash pan full or red hot embers, only to open the outside door to be met with a gale blowing back into the house, and negotiate the pathway to the bins. By the time I got there the carpets would have holes in, the laminate floors scorched, to say nothing of the hot ashes blown all over my person... doesn't bear thinking about really... anyway it would probably be empty by the time I got to the bin!

Has anybody tried those ash box thingys?

I am guessing the Numatic NV350 cannot cope with hot ashes when you say you let it go out?
Is there such a thing that will work with hot ashes or would the cost be prohibitive?
(will look up the Numatic NV350 on the net to see the spec.)

Thanks for that.

.....and when the two ashpans are cooling, pop in your nuts! chestnuts of course

No comment! LOL... Mind you, I don't mind roasted nuts....

I was wondering how I was going to roast them this year now the open fire has gone!

Good move....

Chuck the ashpans away and just use a shovel. Try to clean it out when the fire is out, or cold, because when the ashes are hot, they tend to stick to the shovel and you have to bash it to release the hot ashes.
