There's only a positive there for half the time. The other half of the time there's a negative.The timer switches I am familiar with replace the light switch and only the positive feed is available and no neutral.
Maybe they find that's an easy way to stop the great unwashed from using CFLs and LEDs and then complaining.No I don't know why either. But the suppliers of these time switches do state that the minimum wattage required to make the timer work is 40 watts and they are referring to a single bulb.
Best solution is to take a neutral to the switch and use a timer which does not rely on a current path through the lamp.
