Its difficult, things and life change, 30 years ago a reasonable knowledge of how a car works would be very advantageous, now, you really dont need to know. 20 years ago a good knowledge of how a computer worked under the bonnet was very advantageous now you dont really need to know.

It all comes back to what the purpose of schooling is. Education isn't necessarily the same thing - it is entirely possible for someone to have passed a load of exams, have a lot of knowledge and still be thick and ignorant. And vice versa.

Education should prepare you for life in the world you live in. You really need little other than basic maths for instance. Teaching the ability to learn and be inquisitive I feel is more important.

no ur right they did say 2015, but now it seems 2017, so my youngest. well ok my youngest may pass his 11+ at 15... well... hmmm.

i done cse's,left school and done city and guilds and advanced craft.
when i was in my last year they bought in n.v.q's and even then the consensus seemed to be they wernt worth the paper they were written on.

so should have we stayed with what we know?as i understand it c+g are back??

when i go to my kids parents evening they have all these different coloured boxes with different letters, and even though my eldest has now left I STILL have to ask what they all mean??they have made it all so confusing for an idiot like me to understand.

why change a simple formula i:e a-f with a + or -. or 1-7
if you got a c+ then you were trying but needed a bit of help if you got an f you were either not trying or had serious problems that needed addressing.

now if my kid gets a platinum it can look like he is a swot but depends on the letters that go with it.even some of the teachers have trouble understanding it.

IF IT AINT BROKEN THEN WHY TRY AND FIX IT?

well you certainly confused me

it may well come unto pass that they will only allow exam boards to set certain exams. Eg - Edexcel does English, AQA does Maths, OCR does science etc etc

That's exactly what's happening I believe.

did 2 a year early at the age of 14 (one of the younger in my class)

Still sounds like a good school.

Did O-levels in '70s when Labour was in power and intent on socialising education system i.e. drag more academic scholars down without pulling less academic ones up. I went to a 'model comprehensive' which had loadsamoney pumped into it and those in the O-level stream were expected to take 7 O-levels, the smarter ones were just about allowed to do 8. We had new buildings, one of the first computers in the country, and all the new machines which went ping.

A grammar school in nearby town were getting their scholars 12 O-levels regularly (and huge numbers of grade A's) so my parents pulled me out and I got sent there.

What struck me was the decrepit equipment and buildings the grammar had. Government was intent on shutting it down and refused to give any more money than neccessary. Ever since I have realised that throwing money at a school is worthless, it's the standard of the teaching that counts.

I passed the 11 plus - just - worse thing that ever happened in my life  I could get by on a couple of academic subjects , but my real joy was hands on stuff - that was non existant there. 5 years of my life wasted by politicians  Mind you , I sucessfully wasted the next 10 off my own bat

Same thing happened to one of my brothers, but he failed the 11 plus, but mother insisted (and I mean insisted) he went to the same school as his brothers.

Possibly the worst thing that ever happened to him. He would have been far better not being in such an academic stream at such an early age. He ended up having to retake years and ended up being chucked out. Nothing at all wrong at all with doing CSEs and being taught other skills. Nothing at all.
