i tried to replace the cluch release arm on my escort van 1800 non turbo deisel. in doing so following the haynes, the release shaft (the spindle in to the gear box) has gone loose and can be minipulated up and down maybe 1.5 cm now. i think i have well and truly messed it up! the van wont go in gear with the new arm on. how can i have broke somthing i dont understand? this was suppossed to be a ten minute job and i think the gear box will have to come out now! i did use an 6" bar to prize the arm off but i would not say i used accessive force by any means! what do you think?

If I have understood correctly you have slid the new release arm over the splined shaft that goes into the gearbox? If so can you remove the new arm and then rotate it a couple of teeth to preload the movement of it? You would need to rotate it away from the cable side to take up the slack if you see what I mean.
yes u got it! but which ever way i do it it wont engage clutch! its off to mr clutch now!
Sounds to me like you have puled the shaft out of the top the clutch fork. I cant remember the exact setup, but i think its bolted into the fork with a clamp bolt....inside the bell housing

those haynes manuals are ####ing terrible! you would think there would be a warning of that! like i said its my fault its happend but one would think the design would be a little better than that! very upset about the hole thing! the van was only £400 and god knows if it will pass another mot! it has had the welding on the sills done tho!
