A lot of old Escort vans are old post office stock, especially if they are red, but some white vans were also post office vans, these PO vans have been used on VERY short start stop journeys from door to door and as such they usually have low mileages, but have been well serviced. Unfortunately theres a down side to all this.....these vans usually suffer from 2 major problems early in their life...worn inner CV joints and glazed clutch friction plates and flywheels, both caused by excessive pulling away, and its these 2 probs that cause "Judder" on the diesel escort. I changed the clutch on my van and gave the flywheel a thorough scrubbing with emery cloth to remove the sheen from the flywheel, this solved the problem but after a few thousand miles the prob returned so in the end I should also have changed the flywheel. the inner CV joint wear shows up as "lurching" especially in 2nd gear when you pull away from traffic lights, you will also notice the gearstick rocking backwards and forwards in rythm to the lurching. Ford knew there was a judder prob on the Escort 1.8, and they fitted a special hydraulic engine mounting to help absorb the judder, its fitted to the front of the engine near the clutch housing, its rather large and black.
