I want to create a stock control spreadsheet, it will do
"opening stock" "+purchases" "-sales" "=current stock" "price per unit" "stock value"

with a row for eached named stock item

all very easy and I know how to do the calculations

but I have forgotten how to do column headings  and can't find it in "help"

I will also want to label some rows "subtotal" or "total" and can't remember how to do that either.

I used to know......

I am on MSOffice 97

TIA

You just click in the appropriate cell and start writing! Excel will detect the top row automatically as a heading for other functions

Same thing with subtotals and totals - and the sum function is on the icon menu an looks like a backwards 3 or M on its side - click in the required cell, then click the sum icon and excel with highlight the cells above and you can adjust as necessary

thanks, I've remembered it now.

I set the top row as General and don't include it in calculations.

I can do the calculations and formulae.
