Bought a couple of exhaust U clamps & found they only come with the 2 nuts but no spring (or similar) washers.

Back in 'my day' nuts were never used on any thread without the appropriate washer, so are they now considered unnecessary (for clamps) or are the suppliers trying to save a few pennies?

My "economy" beef is the fag paper thin copper washer that came with the OEM oil filter fitted to WWMBO's Peugeot 2008 at last service. Wouldn't seal onceoil warmed up so had to go back to garage. Fortunately they're only just round the corner. My old Disco had a one a good 2mil thick so that would always seal.

Diesel id guess

More likely to come loose with washers, I'd have thought? I think the idea is that the nuts deform the steel of the clamp, locally, as they're tightened up, making it less likely that they will undo. I guess nobody undoes exhaust clamps these days, they're just so rusty by the time that needs to happen?

I tend to replace sump plug washers with the appropriate size of Dowty washer. That seems to work well and they come undone easier.

More and more are moving to that style as oe.

But some peugeot diesels use a flimsy copper washer that struggles to seal. Much better to use a non oe replacement

Thanks for that, I'll refit w/o washers.
I think the old clamp nuts will undo after an application of Duck Oil, but I bought the new ones just in case the threads shear.
