I'm looking to install a video doorbell in replacement of a standard push button/backlit one. The existing externa transformer/chime unit is only 6VAC so its not suitable, so I was going to swap it for a byron 776 (8v 1amp) combo unit instead. The doorbell can work in the range of 8-24VAC / 5-40VA.

I popped open the externa units cover to find its currently wired (upside down) to the button using what appears to be a 6 core solid telephone extension, with a pair bonded to each terminal and the last pair tucked out the way. I've not seen one wired like this before! I measured the core with a caliper and it appears to be around 0.36mm in diameter, the total wire length i'm not 100% sure of as its in the wall but shouldn't be more than 3 metres.

Would it be safe to install the byron 776 using this same cable in pairs to the video doorbell?

8v is low voltage so it'd be safe enough, at the bottom of the range so I'd be tempted to use 12v if it's easy/no-cost

Thanks for the reply. I can't seem to find any chime/transformer combo that can do more than 8v, if there are any you know of I'd be very interested. I could wire up a separate transformer and install next to a dedicated chime but it'll be a bit uglier as its currently high up on the wall in plain view in our hallway.

The doorbell (one of the ring units) does have the option of a wireless chime instead but in my experience a wire is definitely more reliable than a wireless connection. They do a nice looking transformer enclosure too, although their transformer can only do 24v/0.42amps which is only marginally better.

Ah sorry, I'd missed that you're using the chime, thought it was just the transformer.

Finally got this installed. I decided to use all three pairs of what turned out to be 0.4mm telephone wire. All seems to be working well and not a hint of heat from the cable etc.

One thing I did want to check though is after removing the old bell push, the wire was too short so needed extending. I currently have this connected to some pigtails via wago 221's tucked neatly in the angled adapter plate. The screw terminals on the back of the doorbell itself are exposed in the same space and ring appear to sell an accessory kit using awful wire nuts, so my thinking is this should be safe to do. It's also suggested online in quite a few places... but I just wanted to double check?
