Extendable shower curtain pole

Our plumber put up one of these extendable curtain poles in the shower which was fine for a while. I thought 'What a good idea' at the time. Now it keeps coming down and it is a real fiddle to put back up. I have finally mastered how the twist and lock action works. Twist the telescopic tube to release and extend to the right length between tiled walls, twist tube to lock.
Turn end piece to grip against the walls.
Am I doing something wrong or is It just a crap idea? It seems to rely on the rubber ends gripping the tiles.
Is there a trick to it?

Double sided tape at the ends holds it firm.
Pound shops or places like The Range sell double sided sticky pads cheap in pack.

The lock ends up failing after a time of trying to hold the curtain up, time for a new one - or even a proper fixed one?

I've become exasperated by this product (It was supplied and fitted by the plumber but I think it is Screwfix 208HF). It has come down many times now , even when the shower is in not use, including in the middle of the night. The curtain hasn't been mishandled at all. The width is only about 950mm so it should deal with that. I've made sure the contact surface is clean and dry and that it is fitted squarely on the walls with plenty of pressure applied by turning the end. I tried using self adhesive pads on the ends but that only lasted a short time. The pads didn't adhere properly to the ridged end surfaces. I've now resorted to super glue on the rod ends to stick to the adhesive pads as a last chance.
It will be proper screw fixings if this fails.
I do see that Croydex do a slightly more expensive different version where the ends have separate collars which stick to the wall. I don't know if the rod can be cut down to 950mm though.
