Seems to be lots of conflicting info regarding joining cables lately.
I asked a similar question (joining 2.5mm ring main) and crimping is not the preferred method in solid cables. Apparently crimping is meant for stranded cables.
Yet on this thread, crimping 2.5mm and wrapping with HS is the way to go.

Opinions about this vary widely, and are sometimes strongly held. Many electricians do crimp solid conductors but, as has been said (in the other thread) some authorities (NASA being one of them, IIRC!) disapprove of (or even forbid) the crimping of solid conductors.
