Extending Ring Main

If you were to extend a ring main, instead of using a JB under floor you extend using insulated crimps with rachet crimper. Is any other form of protect required, ie heat sleeving or put joint inside a small length of conduit to cover joint and provide mechanical protection? Would it be ok to just crimp with the ins crimps? Please spread sum light

You must still put the joint inside an ensloure. All cables and connectors must be double insulated - The enclosure takes care of this as long as you take the sheath inside!

you can use a larger heat shrink over the top, or put the joined length into plastic conduit. Stagger the crimps so they are not all on top of each other.

If the joined lengths are in trunking that also provides good protection,but allow for bunching factors.

Some people use self-amalgamating tape but it looks a dreadful bodge.

Would a length of plastic conduit say 4inch long over the crimped joint be ok? Does it need to be fixed using a saddle to stop it moving from the joint?

Use an adaptable box - either plastic or galv. Suitable TRS glands.

Conduit is for cable containment, not for containment of joints.

I also HATE opening up trunking runs to add new circuits and finding crimped joints. If YOU have to join a length of cable run in trunking, mount a galv box to the trunking, and join in this. Use two brass bushes and 2 locknuts/rings. If you are a real pro, add some female bushes aswell.
