Hi,
Going to paint the front of the house, The stone sill is in a bit of a state, Anyone know the best exterior filler/undercoat/paint for stone and the same for wood ? Some of the paint on the sill is sound and a bugger to get off can I just fill, sand down and then under coat over the sound paint ? Do I need a special undercoat for stone ? Not sure what stone it is in the pic, any ideas ?
Thanks
Jim

Probably a stupid question Wayners but should I still undercoat the stone after priming ? And as alkaline primers go found Zinsser Gardz and peel stop, I could use the latter on the wood as well as I have found that in a bad state also (Flaky) been at it with wire brush, sandpaper, Scrapers. getting it back to pretty sound but was thinking maybe the Zinsser Peel Stop might save me ???? Place was built in 1907 and like the the other owners i don't fancy stripping it back to nothing. I stripped most of the paint (approx 4-5mm in most places) off the sill by gently tapping with an hammer !! the tourpret filler is on its way. I thought id id have it shipped and ready to paint in a couple of days in my naivety :rolleyes::rolleyes:
Cheers

Yeah. Undercoat.
Normally good practice to use the matching undercoat although I sometimes skip it knowing it's ok.

Scrape off , knock off obvious loose paint

If you are fussy you could use a sander but there is years of paint on there so dust off and clean the sills

Gardz on bare stone

Fill , sand back , dust off , clean in patchy areas ......guardz again

Personally on the bare areas I would also " spot prime " with a suitable primer

Then get a exterior undercoat for the sills and coat ....if it's staying black a dark grey

Then one , pref two topcoats of your chosen finish

Exterior satin , exterior etc etc
