Ok first, you're dealing with someone who has trouble knowing what end of a paintbrush to use!...

I was hoping someone could help with a question I have. Im currently planning to jump head first in to fixing up the front of my house to sell, and a lot of the paint is coming away from the walls. I guess simple scraping and cleaning is needed for those areas, but there is one or two areas around the exterior bay window where the paint is coming away and taking some of the exterior plaster behind with it.

Now what is the best way to treat this. If I pull it all away, is there a simple 'out-of-the-tub' exterior plaster I can buy to put back what I took off, and then paint over?

I've attached a picture of part of the job I'm up against, the plaster is coming away behind the paint on the left hand pillar next to the window where you can see the black crack!.

Any help/advice is much appreciated!

Thanks.

I think the important thing here is to try and ascertain how bad the underlying substrate is before any form of repair is undertaken.

Remove all the loose flaking paintwork and in your case whatever comes off with it, take another pic that shows the full extent of the failing masonry and paintwork alike.

We can give you advice regard to the correct fillers and paints to use but we first need to know just how bad that degradation is.

Sorry I could'nt offer you better advice at this stage but it is important to know exactly what we are dealing with.

Thanks for the advice Dec. I'll crack on and see what I can do, and repost some pics once I've dug deeper in to the job.

Cheers!

And, unless you're good with a trowel, be prepared to contact a plasterer or builder.

BTW plaster is used indoors- rendering is the sand and cement based finish below the cills.

IF it needs replacing then it will need to be hacked off using a "kango". A job for a pro. if a skim fill will suffice then an exterior filler like Toupret extrior TOUPRELITH F will suit once it has been prepared

http://www.toupretpro.co.uk/products/product_view.php?pid=5

It is grey and has a textured finish to match the render and can be sanded

Oddly it does look like someone has used plaster in places- hard to see from the picture- if they have then remove all traces of any pink plaster, it might be sucking water up over the DPC

Aged wet plaster will be soft, render will not.

Also check you guttering the next time it pours down. See if it is overflowing onto the masonry.
