Yup, spot on, just squarely taking the top off of it and then once fitted, gluing it back down. If you make the cut fine enough, it should fit back together nice and clean, and then use the square pipe clips to support it all
Looks like I've got this job now.
What size insulation would go in the square down pipe?
I'm being lazy. Not looking it up but imagine it's 3".

If I remember rightly the square downpipe is 65mm so closer to 2.5" I would think.

Using 100mm square trunking and 40mm wall insulation would be the easiest, quickest and most practical if you ever needed to access the pipe again.

That's a good shout but wondering if it's suitable for external use and if the insulation would be large enough for the winters we look like we're going to be getting.
