Hi
I’m currently redecorating a bathroom and would like to update the existing appliances. There is an earthed lighting circuit in my house. Is it allowed to connect a new extractor fan and a shaver light directly to a bathroom ceiling rose (junction box) or should the connection rather be done via FCU (located outside the bathroom) supplied from a ring main?
I realise that this work is notifiable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Yes you can connect fan and shaver outlet to lights, but it will all need protecting with an RCD.
Existing installations do not need upgrading but any additions must comply with new regulations and until June this year bathroom lights did not need RCD protection so it is unlikely they are already protected.
Without scrutinising the 17th Edition I am not sure on shaver socket with surface wiring it may not need an RCD as it is an isolated supply.
But fan will need RCD.

Looked at 17th it says "701.411.3.3 Additional protection by RCDs
Additional protection shall be provided for all circuits of the location, by the use of one or more RCDs having the characteristics specified in Regulation 415.1.1." so it seems you must have RCD protection for shaver socket supply although I can't see why as it will only protect the wire but I don't make the rules.

Eric, Thanks for your advise and quick response.

one common way to comply with the need for an RCD in the bathroom circuit it to put the circuit on an RCBO (MCB and RCD combined) if one is available for your consumer unit (fusebox).

complying with notifying under part p of the building regs is another matter.
