Are you sure that it is a permanent live?

Turn the fan off from the switch, connect the permanent live to the switched live, the fan should come on.

Thanks,
Would that kick the timer on, I have checked the perm live, when switch is off I still have power to the perm live connection, this is in the perm live part in timer

if i take out the perm live and connect it to switch live, do i then connect switch live into perm live hole

no that was just a test to make sure that it is infact a permanent live.

have you set the timer?

It may be that the extractor fan is faulty.

i changed over the 2 live wires, the fan operates exactly the same, asin it comes on when i turn on and off etc.
This is the 2nd fan!!

In that case, you dont have a permanent live, you are using two switched lives.

If it was a permanent live, the fan would run without using the light switch.

Where did you take the wiring from, ceiling rose?

You should get in a qualified electrician.

see what you mean, but whether I have the switch on or not the so called perm live wire is live, and the swich wire is either on or off depending, think i need a neutral somewhere, thanks for the help

no i dont have one of those useless neon things, i have a tester, I tested the neutral and live and that was spot on 240v, not tested the perm live except with a live wire indicator and that lit up like a christmas tree,
