hello and thanks to all that answer,
Just changed the f18 gearbox on an N reg vectra. All went well apart from bleeding the clucth, pig of a job!! eventually got it bled and took it for a test................ rattling in reverse and slight diff whine when decelerating!! The box was second hand (take your chances!) before i give up on it, just thought it would be worth asking if anyone can link the faults. a friend mentioned it may still be clucth bleeding related, can't see it myself.

any ideas welcome!!

bleeding or air in the clutch will have no effect on transmission whine or rattle.

Sounds like the box is worn.

that was my opinion. too dishartened to change it again!! probably just have to put up with it until it collapses again!! i'm sure there made of cheese!!

Try some Redline gearbox oil in it. It's not cheap, but does bring tired boxes back to life most of the time! It's a favorite with Mk2 Golf owners!
