I heard there was something you can buy which hooks over the ridge of roof which you attach your harness too when on a ladder working but can't find one, anyone heard of this?

I haven't heard of such a device and I doubt such a device exists.

Given there is a wide range of ridge designs and that some may be deteriorating I would think it difficult if not impossible to design a hook that would hook securely onto the ridge.

Fall avoidance is by far the best way to avoid injury, learn and practise the safe way to work from ladders and falls are unlikely to happen.

looks like one part of the lanyard is passed around the chimney .

You can get roof ladders, they hook over the ridge. Then you can tie yourself into the ladder.
As per the previous posters you would n need proper access equipment, a risk assessment would take all mitigations and risks into account and seek to reduce them all to acceptable levels

Thereby allowing you to fall, pull the ladder off the roof which then lands on you as you lie on the ground.

Tying yourself to a ladder, especially a roof ladder is a ridiculous and potentially lethal idea.

Well at least that illustrates my second point that a risk assessment is essential rather than a 2 minute post on the way to work:D
I use a rope thrown right over the rigde and tied off to the car tow-bar
Depends how heavy you are, imagine getting hit by the car as it flies over the house:eek::LOL:

You fall and the fall arrest system stops you reaching ground and thus avoiding injury from an impact with something hard.

You are now suspended above the ground in the harness, your weight being carried by the straps.. How you get down ?

Pressure from the straps onto your flesh can affect blood flow around your body.

How long can you "hang around" before pressure from the harness straps causes problems ?

Never attach the rope directly to the harness, use one of these or similar in between to take up slack so there's hardly any jerk in a fall ...
