Hi there,

Hopefully a quick one. Got a false ceiling to put up under a concrete ceiling so can get downlights in. It's about 3m by 2.77m.

Do you think I can get away with 2x4 for that span?

And any recommendations for type and quantity of fixings for the 3m timber attached to walls?

And are hangers essential?

Thanks

I'm no structural engineer but ceilings weigh next to nothing so I would say it's fine, no need for hangers, and 5mm screws with wall plugs between each joist into the wall.
A cheaper option if there's no issue fixing to the ceiling is just batten the existing ceiling with 2x2 and plasterboard that.

3x2 will be plenty. Or (given the ridiculous price of timber these days) might be worth looking at metal suspended systems

Great, thanks! I’ll prob stick with 4x2 for bit more clearance for downlights

If you are going to insulate above the new ceiling make sure you get fire hoods for the downlighters.
