Hi,I've got a couple of exterior front doors which are to be coated in farrow and ball exterior u/c and gloss, the doors have been taken back to bare wood and one of them is quite an old door my question is although the u/c is a primer as well do you think it will be ok to go straight on with this or prime them with something first maybe coverstain or something similar, many thanks for any advice.

Their primer will raise the grain because it is waterbased.

I recently had to paint some external timber with waterbased primer, every spot of 2 pack filler swelled up (slightly but noticeably). I sanded it back, applied the paint and it swelled again, and again, and again.

If you don't care about grain swelling after sanding the wood flat then carry on as you were. Technically, there is no need to sand in between coats provided that you recoat before the last coat has completely cured. ie a day or two between coats does not need sanding.

When "forced" to use waterbase finishes, I used oil based paints first but you need to ensure that they have cured sufficiently first.

Oil based over water based isn't so much of an issue though.
