Can I replace a ring main socket with a FCU

I need to decommision the socket and seal over
the FCU will be sited on the opposing side of stud wall
very close to the socket location

This approach would overcome joining issues on the ringmain

Thanks

When you say seal over does it have to be covered so that it is not visible or can a blanking plate be sufficient?

I really dont see the point of wiring in another accessory if you are not going to need it. All you are going to do is create problems when moving the cables because it might be tricky getting them to remain within safezones.

What joining issues are there?

More info on my problem

The socket is presently in a room to be converted into a bathroom

The socket needs to be taken out of use and the site will be tiled over
therefore the join must be permanent and will be inaccessible - hence
joining issues - should be crimped?

As the FCU required for towel rail supply will be in close proximity to the
socket site - but on the other side of stud wall - in corridor I thought
of using the FCU as a terminal block which would be accessible and so
solving all issues - is this practice OK

OK, I see it now. The ideal solution will not involve joining any wires at all. This will work if the existing wires will reach the point where you want to fit the FCU. :) :) :)

But maybe the old socket is low down and you want the new FCU in a more convenient, higher location. :? :? :? One way out of this is to refit the socket directly opposite to its old location - whereupon the wires will certainly reach - then spur off it to the FCU.

Just make sure that the socket really is on a ring first. The presence of two cables is no guarantee. Somebody might have added a spur to a spur. :x :x :x The way to find out is to take the wires out of the socket terminals - power off of course - and check for continuity: live to live and neutral to neutral. (Continuity between earths doesn't prove anything.)

The joining of wires will be the result of 2 cables feeding the supply terminals of FCU - thus keeping the circuit - I do not need the socket replacing

Nobody has yet stated this is OK

A fused spur can be direct from a ring main, so yes you can do what your suggesting.

Where other posters have been helpful, your missing the point.

All that was suggested is that a towel rad normally sits mid wall, not from the floor up. So if the rad is mid wall then to avoid a trip hazard and unsightly flex cable drop- having the fused spur nearer to the towel unit is aesthetically better.

Is that clear enough for you
