Hi gents im putting some rads back on the wall after decorating, the info on the tin says to put the jointing compound on the male thread some one on here suggested it should go on the union, can anyone clear this up for me. thanks ps these are not new rads or tails.

Put a smear of jointing comp on the mating surfaces of a union joint. I also put some on olives in compression joints. You don't need to put anything on the threads of union or compression joints, as these don't create the seal.
