Fibre Washer

I am fitting a new ball valve to the cold water cistern. How tight should the fibre washer be compressed and is any sealing compound used.

If its a brass ball valve yes use a smiggin of compound, however if its an plastic ball valve throw the washer away and do the nut up, no compound and no washer.

If you soak the fibre washer in water for, say, ten minutes before fitting, it will soften and the joint will take up a bit easier.

By doing this, I've never had need to use any jointing compounds.
