I have moved into a house with fibreglass wall coverings in some of the rooms (kitchen and utility), I think it is made by Tikkurila and called "Assatex" and seems to be put on with some sort of high strength rubbery adhesive.

The paper is waterproof and effectively fireproof so a heat gun doesn't touch it. I managed to get a half a square metre off in about two hours by melting the glue and some of the old paint underneath it!

Anybody know how to get the bloomin' stuff off the wall?

It may be worth considering skimming it with plaster - It sounds like it's totally bonded to the wall, and waterproof, so should take a skim after treating with pva. Ask in the plastering forum
