We have an outhouse on our property and when we purchased it the previous owner said she was sure there was a water supply laid to the out-building that 'came up in one of the corners'. I've since had the floor up down to the concrete slab and there was no evidence of a supply.

Just before Christmas the previous owner visited to pick up some mail, and I asked her about it again. She said she was certain, she remembers a 'blue pipe' being buried from from the rear of the main house to the corner of the outhouse. The fact she recalls it being blue makes me think she's probably not mis-remembering it.

How do I go about locating this mystery supply without digging up the whole garden? Are there special tools?

This is a useful overview of the pro and cons. My guess is you’ll be wasting your time and money based on a throwaway comment.

If it's just a pipe that has been buried but not connected to a water supply then you will need to dig a trench across the front of the out building approx 600- 800mm deep.
