This is a one bedroomed purpose built flat. It has one living room, one bedroom, one kitchen, one hall and one bathroom. The aim is to remove the door between the kitchen and hallway and widen the opening by about 18 inches to make it all one walk in space. I was told by a builder that it still needs a door between the hall and kitchen for fire reasons, while another said there is no need. Does anyone know what the regs are in this situation.

Do you have to pass the kitchen from the living area/bedroom to an exit door of the flat, do you have more than one exit door to the outside.
Do you lease the flat, what are the Landlords conditions regarding structural alterations.
Would the Property Insurance Company allow it .
What sort of Smoke Detector system do you have in the flat

Open Plan Kitchens are acceptable under certain circumstances.

Nakajo, thanks.
It is on the 6th floor.
The layout:
Front door into the hall - the only exit door.
Kitchen door ahead.
Bathroom door to the left.
Living room and bedroom doors to the right.
Kitchen has a window to a landing, which is another exit point in case of fire by smashing windows or climbing through an opening window.
Smoke alarm in hall outside kitchen door and heat alarm in the kitchen.
