Fireplace - any use sugestions other than fireplace!

Hello.

Currently I am revamping my house and I've knocked through a bit of plasterboard in to an old fireplace area.

The chiney is capped off and taken down so i cant use it with a fire.

I thought at the time it might make a bit of a nice feature, now im not so sure!

Any ideas what I could use this area for? I ahd even thought of plastering it out, maybe shelving, or a safe?

Has anyone got any ideas for me!

Plastered and with a low shelf you could use it to display a feature piece of pottery or something similar. Mind you, I think you would have to take the skirting into the old fireplace for it to look right. Is it worth the bother? Personally I would just fill it in and plaster the wall flush.

Perhaps i might have to buy another gun safe to fill the void. I know what you mean about extending the border to make it look proper.

any further ideas ?
