Fireplace Levelling

Hello all,
First time DIYer here looking for advice on how to level this fireplace ready for tiling.

I'd like to know the best way to bring up and level the fire pit area to the same level as the hearth extension, and what is the best way to prep the hearth extension for tiling.

The old gas fire has been removed and the connector sealed. Can that be covered over?

OP,
1. Presumably you intend to tile the front hearth and the back hearth?
2. Mix enough sand and cement at 3: 1 or 4:1 to fill in the back hearth.
3. Just dump it in & build it up level with the front hearth - rule off with a stick.
4. Give it a few days to dry & then mark a centre line from back to front edge.
5. Using the line as a guide then dry lay all your tiles to fit - then remove them.
6. Comb tile adhesive across both hearths.
7. Butter the back of your tiles & set them on the combed hearth.
8. When dry laying you determine what kind or type of edgings you want.

Its most important that the redundant but possibly still live gas pipe is removed from back to where it Tee's off the mains gas pipe - this is work for a Certified gas person to remove all the redundant pipe.

I would put some DPM down first. Top with cement then.

Exactly the reason to rid yourself of a pointless raised, toe stubbing trip hazard.

It would be gone quicker than you could say ouch!

Depends what he is going to use the fireplace for. Not everyone walks around with their eyes closed like you! Lol
