Can I fit the 6mm boards onto unskimmed plasterboards using 40mm roofing nails through to the stud wall? Or do I have to fit straight onto the stud wall? It is just the builders have put the plasterboard on already.

I would trowel the wall up with a thin bed of adhesive (use a 6mm notched trowel and rapidsetting flexible adhesive) then offer the board up and screw it.

6mm board is too thin I imagine for fitting straight onto studs, 12mm is better.

Just to add, for what reason are you usingHardibacker?

Weight of tiles issue or for water reasons?

im guessing this is a bathroom / shower room of sorts?

if the plasterboard is there and your wishing to tile onto it, tank it first, you wont have any issues about falling hardi board then

Yes I agree, apply a waterproof membrane onto the plasterboard.

What tiles are you using though, Hardibacker may be sensible if it is natural stone or large format Ceramic/porcelain.
