I used to have a pastic pendent light in the living room, but my wife went out and bought a metal 3 bulb uplighter made of metal.

Looking at the new fitting it is wired up with 3 wires with the letters for live earth and neutral, and looking at the old light fitting it has 3 wires the same so is it a simple case of just transferrinh the wires over to the right connection. the problem is doing this will it be earthed like the old one as it is metal

see for reference for how it should be wired. and it MUST be earthed. if your lighting circuit doesnt have an earth, it might be worth considering a re-wire
