Fitting shelving on plasterboard

Hi all,

I need to put some shelves up but the walls in one room of my flat are quite thin plasterboard. Will this be possible? I've tried various wall fixings but they just seem to go straight through the plasterboard. I'm beginning to think I might have to just buy a free standing unit so this is my last resort!

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but I couldn't find anything under search.

if your talking books or similar heavy find the studs [verticle support members ]about every 400mm or 16" usualy and secure to them

these are good for lighter work
