Hi
The newel posts of an exterior staircase have been cemented directly into the ground and have now rotted, as have most of the stringers, so I'm looking at a complete repacement.

My inclination is to build the new staircase, dig some new concrete footings and bolt the newel posts down to the concrete using post anchors (I've never used them before, but I assume they allow for water to drain away rather than to accumulate in the foot of the post?)

Has anyone used these bolt down fixings for staircases, or have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I would normally go for a timber post shoe.. which is kinda like a steel stilt urm lets see.. ah here hmm.. well similar would normally bolt the bottom to the foundations cos its easier but doesnt really make much difference..

we normally fix the newels to teh timber, easier to do and if you need to make any repairs etc in the future. Less likely to rot and very strong as its part of the stair construction

Thanks Guys-
I hadn't seen the post shoe, but this might well be OK.

Thermo, please explain- I don't have any timber to fix the newel to, only the concrete footing (it's outside). Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here...

Anything that will reduce the likelihood of the new posts rotting (and yet be stable) is what I'm after!

Thanks again
