As said, screwed or glued fixing through or to pvc cladding seems too fragile, any history of success ?

Fixing Shower caddy to a pvc clad wall, I'm sure a screw would crush the cladding and not sure that the cladding would hold the weight if I glued it

Use screws but don't overtighten.
These are a good alternative as they extend to the space available and tighten up with a quick twist :
