Flags

Then how do we take it back - not being ashamed of flying it would be a start and people not referring to those that do to being flag shaggers is NOT helping.

I don't know the answer. I love the flags at the right times. But seeing them everywhere all the time would make me feel a bit queasy. It just doesn't feel British to me. But I can also see that it is a way of people expressing their unrest. I also believe there are other causes of massive unease in the West that are nothing to do with immigration. It's too much for most people to get their heads around, including me. I would love to fix the boats problem. But even if we do, I still think the country would be very unhappy.

All public buildings should be obliged to fly the Union flag and that of the relevant home nation, schools, libraries, council offices etc. Then there would be no need for anyone else to fly a flag other than a show of support for special events, world cups, coronation, jubilees, VE day etc.

I have my St Georges flag flying in support of the ladies rugby team. It will be replaced by a Union flag once the tournament is over. If people don't like it, tough, I have to put up with Palestinian flags, rainbow flags etc.

In the USA, it seems all public buildings sport the Stars & Stripes, plus many private homes too. It does seem odd that we in the UK, are so ashamed of the flag, we limit it to special occasions, yet we put up with others in the UK, flying theirs.

I didn't have any flags, never thought to fly one, but I now have a Union flag on order. My plan is - at the very back of my garden, I already have a 15 foot scaff pole, acting as the far support for our washing line. Clamped to the top of that, will be a ten-foot fibre pole, with the flag on the top of that. Not much passing road traffic at the front of the house, but the flag will be very visible to lots of rail passengers at the rear, a very busy line with trains passing every few minutes.

Yes, dictatorships often display many flags to foster loyalty, promote national unity, and symbolize state power and ideology. Flags act as potent tools for communication, conveying deep political and cultural messages to evoke emotions and enforce a collective identity within the population.

The state isn't putting these flags up, it's the people doing it in protest of the state.
If seeing the flag of the country you live in causes distress, then you are the problem.

From this thread we have learned that patriotism is two-tier.

My point was simply that seeing flags everywhere makes me think of dictatorships. It just doesn't feel British.

Just finished my house, that was a day well spent
