I got a mate who wants to replace all 5 of his 500w floodlights he has an over-ride switch which he wants to keep, as far as I can tell he just takes 5 down and puts all the new ones up and the over-ride switch will work 1st time?

2.5 Kilowatts of lighting is a little OTT suggest he thinks about using 150W lamps.
Replacing is faily straight forward, just make sure the earth loop impedance is whithin the maximum allowed by BS7671 for the breaker that protects the circuit.

it really depends on how the over ride works in relation to the cureent lights

i preusume you actualy mean he has combined pir / flood lights.

personaly i hate them

people often have a 500w light because that is what is most commonly available, then they mount it as high as possible and light all the neighbours houses too

if the circuit was originally correctly wired, then all should be good for a direct swap.

i would want to look at the loading first - I hope the circuit has been wired to take account of the rather huge load. Assuming they are all linked that is?

i dissagree

suppose they are pir / floodlights and have no over ride facility?

(although most to keep them on you just quicl;y switch off then on)

Your looking at about 10Amp I believe, he said its the normal flick the switch off then on again for over-ride, yes they are PIR combined the lamps could be 200w though, TLC supply 200w lamps I think which will bring the load right down, technically he is allowed to just swap them over isn't he.

BTW they all work but the paint has flaked off and he doesn't like the look of them. :D

Depends on the quality

And stop disagreeing with me  If it is a direct like for like swap, all would be good. If he chose an incompatible type, then obviously not.

yes, (sort of)

I agree with what you say, but there is no g'tee that the blokes mate knows that there is a differnce between the two

and yes the paint will still flake.

they get v hot which does the light no good.

only 1 type of light that dont flake.

non painted / coated (they just rust instead)

First Light do some very good ones with a hard wearing finish - We use these all the time, £20 a pop. They last years and years. Don't come with a PIR though.

infact, TLC do them by the look of it:
