I have a 500w floodlight I'm wanting to install in the garden (Halogen Bulb), which type of flex should I be using for longevity etc and safety for this? I'm looking to purchase some from eBay around 5 meters worth? any suggestions please would be appreciated. thanks.

A 500 watt floodlight will need the agreement of your local council before you install it, Maximum permitted without special permission is 150 watts.

The money you save by buying "cheap" on e-bay may be at the cost of havig sub-standard, possibly un-safe cable being supplied.

I guess I will phone the council then and I doubt very much most of the street have done when installing their own floodlight, so if they refuse I'll just have to tell my elderly mother (who wants it for putting her rubbish out at night) she will have to go back to B&Q and tell them the light she bought is illegal for her to use if that's the case.

perhaps a 20w LED 1600 Lumens light may be better for her.

I`ll purchase elsewhere then for decent cable.

thanks for the advice.

Icebergs beware!! ;)

however Taylor you seem quite surprised, I think if you go to most detached houses and inspect the lights hanging above garages you`ll find most are at least 400w + I'm surprised "your surprised"

Enforcement notices have been served on people whose excessively bright floodlights have been seen to be a nuscience to neighbours. Another reason for action being started is if the light can dazzle motorists.

Many things are sold even though using them may be illegal in some circumstances.

I would imagine somebody would have to complain before they would serve any enforcement, I don't see or hear of many council officials knocking on doors shouting "OI you take your light down it's too bright"

it's in the back yard too, no motorists will be going by where I plan to install.

I've fitted a 150w floodlamp for someone recently, and thats plenty bright enough to light up their front garden and the carpark in front!

B&Q also sell bricks, timber, windows, roofing tiles, sand, cement, consumer units, cables and wiring accessories, gas boilers, radiators, WCs, pipes....

Everything, in fact, that you'd need to build an entire house, but just because you can buy it all there doesn't mean that you can build a house without permission and without complying with regulations.

I would just like to echo what Bernard said here - I foolishly bought some iron flex from the bay, it went bang on the second use.

Absolute crap & very dangerous.

Beware.

I recently replaced a 500w floodlight in my garden (that was present when we bought the house) with a 10w LED one and am more than happy with the light output. I'd never fit anything else now.
