In normal size domestic rooms, the furniture normally goes round the edge, but if I lived in a mansion with much large rooms I would probablly want to put furniture in a location that was not alongside a wall. At which point I would want to get power to those locations without having to gaffer tape extension leads to the floor.
I have some in my music room to avoid trailing flexes and extension leads. It's the whole of the semi basement. I put them in soon after moving here when I was somewhat more flexible. They only serve a purpose, where power might be needed, away from the wall, towards the middle of a room. Those I have seen, but never in a domestic setting, have the socket in an inset box, with a carpeted lid, and a flap for the flex outlet. Usually, including a LAN socket. This arrangement is common, in offices, using rows of desks, with the outlets under the desks.
Many of the recessed lids are now all plastic. The lid has to be metal
Geeez ... fortunately, I put mine in while they were still lacquered brassMany of the recessed lids are now all plastic.

Are they? Shows how long it's been since I used them, they must be reinforced, you wouldnt want a metal chair leg going through? Many of the recessed lids are now all plastic.
That makes two of us then PeteAre they? Shows how long it's been since I used them, they must be reinforced, you wouldnt want a metal chair leg going through?
The last I remember seeing, were a metal box base, sockets mounted in the box. Lid was plastic, with a square top, into with a recess to drop a section of carpet. Around the edge, was a recessed flap, allowing flexes to exit. A recessed metal U bracket, enabled the lid to be lifted, to insert, or remove plugs. Are they? Some of the 2nd sort do indeed have plastic lids.

I'm as sure as I can be, having grovelled under furniture in offices to plug things in, that some have plastic sockets.Yes, the second sort must have a metal socket inside I would think?
