Floor tiles -

Copied from Flooring thread. Got similar issue myself- any help welcome.

After removing some horrible laminate flooring in preferance for floor tiles we have found the concrete floor covered in 10 inch square tiles. Not sure on what they are made of but a lot of 70's houses have them. About 3mm thick and they are brittle but do come up easily.

Underneath there is the residue of the adhesive which is black. It is not sticky at all but was wondering if it is ok to use the tile adhesive without any other prep??

Keggo123; I’ve posted you the same reply as on beefsters thread on floors/stairs/lofts. For future reference it’s best to ask admin to move the thread rather than copy it onto another forum.

as it can be layed on top of any Bitumin adhesive left.

ARRRRG, for gods sake use a quality trade adhesive not DIY shed crap or it could all end in tears.

Tiling over old bitumen based adhesive can be problematic; ideally you should get it all off but this is often nigh on impossible unless it’s gone rock hard. Whatever you do don’t start using solvents on it to wash it off as it will soften, become active & your tiles will never stick.

Use an SBR based primer & a flexible powder cement adhesive.
