Flooring spacers.. do we really need such a big gap in a small room?

I totally understand the need for spacers on laminate or engineered wood flooring.
But, having had a bit of an ongoing (ahem..) 'disagreement' with my partner who seems to think:
"oh 5mm will be fine, it's a small room, it won't expand that much"

And I'm.. "but everyone says we need 10mm regardless on size of room"

So, having got the flooring down in 3 smallish rooms, some bits have the right spacers, some a bit less need I worry as much as I am?
The biggest room is 4m x 2.5m and the smallest is 1.6m x 1m.

Some of the cuts/edges have been quite trixy, hence his reticence to pull up and shave more off and redo.

I thought I'd ask your perspective (and I'm happy to be wrong here TBH)
