OK, so I know what would be best - get some lovely floorboards and out them down. Would probably be lighter work too, but most expensive. Second best, plywood flooring. But, heavy and expensive. But, I am on a tight budget.

So, I am thinking, chipboard. The room I need to board is about 3m by 3.4m. I was thinking of using the loft board t&g chipboard, just because it will be easier. It's cheap too. I wish to keep it accessible in parts too, so might have a few ares where it is just screwed down without the tongues.

Is there any reason, other than its cheap and many people seem to hate it, that I should not do this? The room will be a bedroom. It's a bungalow, so sound not an issue.

Or, should I get the larger boards, the 600 x 2400, and cut them?

Also, currently floorboards are 20mm, and I will probably keep the ones in the bay, as that is fiddlier to replace. But all the chip boards I see are 18mm or 22mm. What should I got for?

THis is one option I'm looking at .. http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-P5-T+G-Chipboard-Flooring-18-x-600-x-2400mm/p/164516

Although, these work out cheap and will be much easier to handle.

Floorboards are not just for walking on, they strengthen the floor. Long chipboards are good at creaking, smaller ones even better, and will allow joists to deflect more. You will need to nog it out to counter the potential to flex with smaller board lengths

Thickness of chipboard is determined by joist spacing, not how heavy it is!

You will need P5 or P7 grade because of the humidity risk.

thanks. So the joist gaps are about 30cm, what is the smallest size boards I should put down?
Are those 2400 x 600 boards I linked to acceptable? They're P5

You say plywood is expensive, but for an extra 3 pounds average on top of your 10 pounds a sheet you can get decent ply http://m.builderdepot.co.uk/18mm-x-1220mm-x-2440mm-wbp-bb-cc-external-plywood.html
Having said that I had 10 delivered "kerbside" which was fun at 32kg each. You'd need a helper. When we went to collect the next lot I just took a circular saw with me. Only takes 2 minutes for an 8 by 4 to turn into a 4 by 4 or vice versa.
