fluorescent dye and uv light to find leak in central heating

mmm.........

I'd hate for anyone to go into my bedroom with a uv light!

Have the tried Sentinal leak sealer?

Its just out of curiousty as I had a leak and leak sealent didnt work but then I found it. Prior to finding it I read about the uv test so am just interested.

We have just used a Comapny called LDV to locate a leak on a sealed system, which they did very quicky, using Accoustic testing (powerfull microphone attached to each rad tail, this showed a leak under the concrete floor in the lounge, they then used a heat seeking camera whch showed a hot spot in the floor, they then introduced tracer gas into the system via the nearest rad ans used a "hydrogen" detector to confirm that the tracer gas was present in the suspect leak site
a damp test was then carried out on the floor to fully confirm

They were very efficient and the job was virtually "non invasive"
so full marks to them!!

Yer that is what I was reading about when come across someone did this.

With underfloor suspect leaks I listen to each rad tail with an acoustic stethescope.

I also have an ultrasonic sound meter which can "hear" leaks but only with gas or high pressure water.

Does this work with plastic, yes i gather ?

I dont expect very well because copper pipe is very taut and transmits sound very well.

His stethoscope can hear every drop leaving the pipe"!!!

Yes the companies who specialise in leak detection will use number of kit mostly very expensive, thus most of this work is carried out on behalf of insurance companies

A mix of nitrogen and helium gas is normally introduced into the system and as the slab is porus it will leak out and thus a sniffer can locate it

detection is normally very non intrusive, but the repair work is not :P :P

Would a normal stethescope have a chance of listening to a leak or would it have to be a expensive one ?

I have read you can drain the systemn and hook a compressor up and then listen out for the leak whick should make a hissing sound. Has anyone done this ?
