when you have a new boiler fitted, does it matter how old the pipes are if they are flushed through? my father in laws pipes must be approximately 38 years old, is it true any pipes over 8 years old are better off not being flushed because they could start to leak in places?

No its ******..........Ive had pipe leak whilst flushing that are 6 months old. You will proberbly find they are less likely to leak as the grade copper used back then was much better than now and the thickness of the walls of the copper will be better.

its unusual for the pipe to burst along its length, its more likely to pop a solder joint.

the way I would look at it is, the pipework is in poor condition. If I don't flush it, it'll stay that way, if it leaks - well I tried!

There are two aspects you have to be aware of.

Firstly is it really copper and not steel so test with a magnet !

Secondly, it may well be imperial sizes. Thats not impossible to deal with as there are conversion fittings available.

Also pressurising a previously open vented system can cause unexpected leaks.
