Flymo Briggs and Stratton engine

Ah, that's what that pipe is for, I thought it was a crankcase breather  There seems to be plenty of fuel, when it starts misfiring its chucking out black smoke when it starts again, which is what suggests to me failed ignition, it just suddenly cuts out, when it slows down it picks up again, it soon clears and then runs OK.

I nearly took the carb off because I couldn't find a mixture screw, when I removed the rear brace section, which meant taking out 3 head bolts, I found it, so put it back together again.

I have just ordered a condenser/points set from ebay for £3.50 plus post so I thought it would be worth doing anyway.

Thanks for your help.

Peter

Indeed it could be a condenser issue, so do post back!
These things are so out of date, its difficult to remember what their failing symptoms are!
John :)

An update. I fitted the new points and condenser and it wouldn't run at all :x after disconnecting the coil I found that the new points although touching were not actually making contact, I gave them a clean with a bit of wet and dry and away it went, started very easily but was still collapsing at full throttle - then it ran OK for a bit, then started doing it again :(

I have now removed the carb and found the diaphragm a bit floppy, its clean enough inside, so I have ordered one and will update you with the latest episode.
