hey guys i need some help from you lot, my brother has a ford focus tdci 1.8, and it keeps cutting out, on a few occasions wouldn`t start again, i`ve read all the forums and the culpret seems to be the cam sensor, so i went out a bought myself one and fitted it for just over £20, the problem being it`s still cutting out, but now always starts back up again, i`ve had the fault codes read and it came up with EGR fault, and Mass airflow meter fault, i`m going to put a MAF on it but i didn`t think a MAF breakdown would cause the car to cut out, just run rich or lean, and total failure of a MAF would result in car going into limp home mode, just don`t want to throw lots of money at it as on futher reading of the forums they start banging on about throttle sensors fuel pump solinoids and crank sensors, just wonder and i`m sure there are, anyone with this problem that has been resolved with more than a cam sensor, bit of extra info, it had a dual mass flywheel and clutch fitted about four months ago, another common problem i`m lead to belive, any help much appreciated.......

I can only say, Lee, that these have had several software updates during their life....
It may be worth biting on Fords bullet this time to see what they say...at least a friendly chat with the service manager before you start chucking bits at it!
John :)

i see your in cardiff, give merthyr college a ring. They have a specialist diagnostic diesel centre there, ive sent a few odd ball faults there that they have sorted for not a lot of money
They have all sorts of disgnostic equipment and pump calibration rigs there and the guys are very knowledgable

well fitted the MAF sensor anyway, and it`s proper spannered now, it does say that the ecu may have to be reset if you fit a new MAF, so i might have to book it into a dealership for an ecu reset and possible software download, i would take it to merthyr if it was just cutting out as before but as i said now i`ve got a serious lack of power, what sounds like bad pinking, and cutting out more frequently than before so i don`t think i`d make it, but thanks for the heads up with that because i`ve also got a bmw with no turbo boost, so might take that there.......i`ll keep you updated, thanks guys.....

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour, see if this resets the ECU.

yeah i disconnected it a few hours ago right after the road test, i looked around for somewhere to hang myself and spotted my 10mm spanner so i thought i`d try that before i make the noose.............

has it got a map sensor in the intercooler pipe like the mondeo's?

it`s actually in the intercooler itself and not in the pipe, right next to the intercooler pipe

ok guys took the new maf sensor off, did a 24 hr ecu reset and everything is now back to normal, so it was just the cam sensor after all........
