Can anyone tell me how I adjust the tension on the handbrake as I am having to pull the lever up about 7/8 clicks.

I remeber when I adjusted one on a MkIII Escort car I had years ago that there was a threaded type adjuster (for want of a better way of describing it) under the car which you turned to adjust the tension in the cable and I wondered if the MkVI had a similar set up?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Remove the drums and adjust the shoes nearer to the drum,or the cheating way is pull the handbrake cover back let off the handbrake.don'tforget to leave it in gear !and adjust the 10mm nut under the handbrake lever ,this is only a temporary measure and if you decide to adjust correctly back off the nut.

Are the rear shoes on that van not supposed to be self adjusting?

dmc63 I am dismayed that you would tell someone to improve the hand brake lever travel by adjusting the cable, this is a potentially a dangerous method of adjusting the handbrake and is a method used by bodgers and kerbside "mechanics". How would you think if someone had used your methods and the car handbrake failed to hold on a hill and the car ran away and injured or worse some one you care about. You should go back to your posting and edit your idiotic methods and leave some thing as important as brakes to people who know what they are doing.
