It appears that sent and received messages are being sent and received in duplicate.

I thought it was user error at first but it's been occurring for the last few days.

How do I invite somebody to be a friend (and thus able to send private messages)? I can't find where to do it.

Go to your profile page and click on the smiley friend face near the black line towards the top of the page. Then simply click on "outgoing friend requests" ,enter who you wish to be friends with a Robert's your mother's brother.
