I'm going to build a single storey side extension a few inches from the neighbours house which is right up to the boundary. No windows of theirs to worry about and they'll hardly notice it's there. All falls under permitted development.

Reading up on this, I think I only need to serve a party wall notice if my foundations go deeper than theirs. Correct?

Theirs is a 2 storey traditional 30s detached house. I assume their foundations must be a reasonable depth as my single storey foundations are likely to be 1m deep. How do I find out? Dig a hole next to their house?

My last house was 1940's red brick and had pretty shallow foundations - around 600mm IIRC. I had to go down to about 1.2M.
